BEYOND TIME
Solo exhibition with a focus on calligraphy, exploring spiritual transformation through ritual & prayer
FreeMarket Gallery /Atlanta, GA - c.2022
In 2022 Brandon Sadler presented Beyond Time, a solo exhibition of works displayed at FreeMarket Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia. The collection featured calligraphy, paintings, sculptures, and environmental installation.
The transformational seasons of life are the central theme in this body of work. Time is unyielding – but our perceptions of past, present, and future shift, blur, and refocus in response to the changes in the stories of our lives. This fluidity allows us to reshape our inner-selves, despite the confines of time. The arc of life is represented as a sacred temple where spiritual experiences take place.
In Beyond Time, the visitor entered an immersive setting to be guided through three spaces, each representing an aspect of being. The first was The Gateway, which represented the body – it was the exterior and edifice of the temple, and carried all the marks and scars of time, triumphs, obstacles, and encounters. The second area, The Garden, represented the mind. Here, Sadler’s modern calligraphy works created a sanctuary where thoughts, prayers, intentions were held and took on new forms – here, transformation began. The last space was The Tearoom, the spirit. This was a grounding space to hold artworks with traditional influences, the foundational elements that informed the whole of the exhibition.
